This is the lastest quality newsletter from my friend and communication expert John Mulvey, enjoy
“Communication is the main thing that we have over the rest of the animal kingdom; the spoken word that is, and yet many of us could improve don’t you think?
I thought that sharing a few tips on listening might be useful.
Using your ears twice as much as your mouth will raise your awareness and enable you to become a much better conversationalist.
Passive listeners hear the words yet miss the point.
Active listeners engage eye contact and encourage information, inspiring people to tell them more. They concentrate and evaluate without being judgemental.
Selective listening is the ability to identify the main point of the conversation, particularly ideas and concepts: also a method for hearing what you want to hear.
Kinaesthetic listening is feeling for the other person and understanding from their point of view – stepping into the other person’ s shoes, as it were.
Learn how to ask questions and then shut up, until answered. Don’ t panic when there are silences.
Resist the irritating habit of interrupting, or worse still, changing the subject, particularly when the speaker is in full flow.
Respect the other person and use their name often. Thank them for sharing information with you and leave them with a smile.
I would love to hear from you.”
